As part of EM Records' ongoing "Steel Pan Series", here
is Friends and Countrymen by Earl Rodney - the first-ever
solo album from a Trinidadian steel pan player. This reissue of the original
1973 LP, recorded in New York City by Rodney and fellow expatriate Trinidadians,
is a rootsy stew of Caribbean, Afro-Yoruba and funk influences. Heavy,
propulsive and deep, driven by island percussion and funky bass, peppered
by the imaginative phrasing of steel pan veteran Rodney, with slatherings
of horns and wicked wah-wah guitar, this is a revolutionary release, fusion
in the best sense of the word.
Earl Rodney has been involved with the steel pans almost since the inception
of the instrument, playing since he was 4 years old. An important voice
in Trinidadian music, he arranged and played in award-winning performances
at Trinidad's "Panorama" festival in 1968, 1971 and 1972, and
served as musical director for Lord Kitchener and Mighty Sparrow.
However, seeking artistic growth and freedom, he emigrated to the United
States; on Friends And Countrymen you can hear and enjoy
the results. Joining Rodney on this release are a number of powerhouse
veterans from Trinidad including Fortunia Louis Ruiz on trumpet,
trombonist Oxley Caballero, and master bassist Johnny Cayenne.
Rodney and his countrymen have created a party for you, but fair warning:
stretch and limber up before listening to this CD; EM Records will not

these supple grooves.

エム・レコード＜スティール・パン・シリーズ＞第四弾は、トリニダードのミュージシャンシップが集結して内なるアフロルーツ精神を爆発させた1973年の革命的名盤、アール・ロドニー『フレンズ＆カントリーメン』の世界初CD化である。
全曲ロドニーの作曲／アレンジでセルフ・プロデュースされ、ニューヨークで録音された本作は、トリニダードのパン奏者による初のソロ名義アルバムであり、ファンク、アフロ・ミュージック、ソカ、ラップにスティール・ドラムをブレンドした唯一無比のディープな音世界を展開する。ラプソのルーツともいわれ、スティール・パン・ミュージックに変革をもたらした重要作品！！ヤン富田ファンもディープ・ファンク・フリークもMUST。
■アーティストとアルバムの背景について■
アール・ロドニーは、スティール・ドラムが発明されたその黎明期、1940年代よりパンを演奏し、60年代にはソロ・ハーモナイツ・スティール・オーケストラのアレンジャーを務め、一方では、ロード・キチナーやマイティー・スパローの音楽監督としても活躍したトリニダードを代表するパン・マンである。
トリニダードにおいて、社会的に地域に密着して成立したとされるスティール・ドラム・ミュージックは、反面で、そのあり方と概念が制限される傾向にあったという。新たなスタイルを試みる者、またプロの音楽家の道を選ぶものは、自由な活動の場を求め、合法／非合法とりまぜて、自主的に国外に出ていった（ルディー・スミスはその代表）。
本アルバム『フレンズ＆カントリーメン』は、当時、ニューヨークで音楽活動をしていたトリニダード出身の仲間達（※必ずしも自分達のやりたい音楽だけをプレイしていたわけではなく、抑圧された状況にいた者が多い）にアール・ロドニーが声をかけ、制約なしで、自分達の表現したい新しい音楽、アフロルーツ精神を解放するアルバムを目指して制作された。
アルバムの録音セッションは、1973年10月のニューヨークで、5〜7人編成のシャンゴ（※脚注参照）をベースに行われ、アフロ・ミュージック、特にヨルバ系のポリリズム、（米国で発展したスタイルとしての）ファンク、ソカ、ラップ（語り）にスティール・ドラムをブレンドしていった結果、それまでのトリニダード音楽では類を見ない極めてディープなものとなった。音と音の隙間を埋め尽くすような編曲、コード数の少ない長尺の楽曲とインタープレイが混沌とした音世界を表現している。特に、幾つかの楽曲の核としてセンターにミックスされている太く重いベース・ギターは、米国での音楽活動を通して身につけたアメリカーナ・ファンクのものであり、その取り入れ方はルーツ・レゲエにも通じる。また、生まれて間もないソカ（＝ソウルとカリプソの折衷）、初期のラップ、それらのクロスオーヴァーも本アルバムの特徴のひとつである。
本セッションから数年後、参加メンバーのFortunia Louis Ruiz、Renwick "Johnny" CayenneらはJambalasieというグループを結成し、よりアメリカーナ・ファンクに踏み込んだカリビアン・ディープ・ファンクのアルバムを発表している（これがまた最高）。
なお、『フレンズ＆カントリーメン』のアルバム・ジャケットはシャンゴの神話を元に描かれたものである。

シャンゴ（Shango）は、ナイジェリアのヨルバ族に伝わる神である。 雷と嵐を司っており、かつては人間であった。その象徴は両刃の斧とされる。（→ウィキペディアより）。本作の場合は、思想的指導者のもとに集まった演奏者グループ（セクト）とみなすのが妥当と思われる。。
