EM "Steel pan" series #3!
Steel pan + disco + dub from 1970s!!
Yet another lost gem from EM Records! Ultra-postive consciousness from
Afro-Caribbean London, circa 1979. Members of the legendary 20th Century
Steel Band (one of Grand Master Flash's favourites) sailing Trinidad-wise
over gratifyingly intricate African ritual rhythms. Strong vocals compliment
reggae, funk, disco and soul influences to form a relentless groove machine.
Steel an' Skin, a unit composed of young nightclub musicians born in Ghana,
Nigeria, St. Kitts, Trinidad and the U.K., who once performed with Ginger
Johnson's Afrikan Drummers, a highlife band under the tutelage of the
late Ginger Johnson and played at Johnson's Iroko Country Club in Hampstead,
London. Steel an' Skin began activities giving concerts and workshops in
London schools, expanding nationwide to schools, prisons, psychiatric hospitals
and summer festivals, including the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival.
The group combined an admirably brave, open and unironic mix of musical
forms with community outreach, non-cynical and untainted by preachiness
or "social work." Good feelings from good hearts.
This EM reissue consists of Steel an' Skin's 1979 debut 12 inch single
"Reggae Is Here Once Again", featuring "Afro Punk
Reggae (Dub)", a fine disco-dub workout, plus 2 tracks from their
1984 LP ACID RAIN as well as one unissued track. Also included
is documentary DVD by Steve Shaw featuring perceptive commentary
from Steel an'Skin's founder Peter Blackman, killer live and rehearsal
footage of the band, workshop scenes (check out the 1970s suits and parkas!)
and devastating views of inner-city Liverpool. Steel an' Skin soars above
the 1970s ruins!

■スティール・アン・スキンについて■
スティール・アン・スキンは、60年代から英／欧で活躍したアフリカン・ハイライフのスター、ジンジャー・ジョンソンのバンド“The Afrikan
Drummers”の一員だったピーター・ブラックマン（トリニダード出身）によって、1970年代初頭のロンドンで結成されたカリビアン系グループ。トリニダード、ガーナ、ジャマイカ等の出身者で構成され、ロンドンに生まれたアフリカン／カリビアンの子供達に、彼らのルーツの文化を教えるワークショップとして主に活動、いちバンドとしても英／ヨーロッパをツアーした。グループ名は彼らの使う楽器（スチール・パンや木製の打楽器など）に由来する。
■本作品について■
スティール・アン・スキンは、1972年からジンジャー・ジョンソンのバンドでプレイしていたブラックマンが、西ロンドンにあったジョンソンのクラブ＜Iroko
Country Club＞（＊注）の箱バン・ミュージシャンや常連の黒人達と結成したバンドである。スティール・アン・スキンがスタートして間もなく、そのうち数人が20th
Century Steel Band（彼らの作品「Heaven & Hell on the Earth」は後にグランドマスター・フラッシュのネタとして世界に広まった）を結成し、アルバム制作のために一時脱退するが、20th
Century Steel Bandが解散した1978年、中核メンバーのバブルス（Michael Olivera またの名を Moutalla
Mohammed）を含む4人がカムバック。本CDの中心となる「Reggae Is Here Once Again」の12インチ・シングルの制作に深く関わった。
「Reggae Is ...」はスティール・アン・スキンの初のレコードであり、その音楽はソカ（カリプソとソウルのクロスオーヴァー）に四つ打ちのディスコ・ビートを導入した革新的ダンス作品で、更に、そこに大胆なダブ処理を加えた「Afro
Punk Reggae (Dub)」は、スティール・パンのダブ作品としても世界初（？）の試みだった。現在もクラブDJの隠しネタとして重宝されている。
＊注：ジンジャー・ジョンソンの＜Iroko Country Club＞は、Average White Band, Osibisa,
Feka Kuti, Peter Sellers, Martin Feldman, Ebenezer Obeyなどが出演したイギリスで当時最もホットなアフリカ系クラブで、ロンドンの黒人層に混じって、多くの有名人、芸能人、ロック・ミュージシャンが出入りした伝説的スポット。

ディスク１は1979年発表の12インチ・シングル「Reggae Is
Here Once Again」（トラック1から4）収録作品に加え、1984年発表の唯一のアルバムからメッセージソングを２曲（トラック5と6）、そして未発表曲１曲（トラック7）を追加収録したコンピレーションCDとなる。
ディスク２は、スティール・アン・スキンの活動を追ったスティーヴ・ショウ制作の短編ドキュメンタリーを収録したDVDビデオ。1979年の「Reggae
Is....」録音制作と連動して撮られたもので、ワークショップの模様、練習風景、また、70年代イギリスのゲットーが生々しく映し出されている。当時、英BBCでも放映されたこの非常に貴重な短編はもちろん世界初DVD化となる。収録時間34分。
